Sanganeri Print — A craft built around a single river
Sanganeri hand-block printing dates to the 16th century — and it began with water. Sanganer had a river full enough to dye, print, and wash cloth through the long Rajasthan summers. So the craftspeople came: from the villages nearby, and from as far as Gujarat and Sindh — the Chhipas who block-printed, the Rangrezas who dyed, the Kagzis who made paper by hand. A whole ecosystem of craft, built around a single river.
01
Carve
Each motif and colour is cut into a separate teak block by hand.
02
Register
Blocks are laid edge to edge by eye — the fine line depends on the printer's hand.
03
Print
Natural dyes are pressed layer by layer to build the bloom.
04
Wash & sun
The cloth is river-washed and sun-dried to fix the colour.
“The line is only as true as the hand that lays it.”
